Peace

Do you remember this old Coca-Cola commercial… “I’d like to teach the world to sing in perfect harmony. I’d like to buy the world a coke and keep it company”?
During the Christmas season, this song is the very first thing I think of every time I hear the word “peace”. Apparently, the commercial really made an impression on 3-year-old Dana! I think what made it stand out to me was the vocal harmony singing about harmony.
Coca-Cola used the promise of peace to market their product proving peace is something everyone wants but struggles to find. They have sold billions of dollars-worth of products but have failed to deliver on their promise of peace.
As believers, we know there is no peace apart from God. In fact, we know peace is only possible through the life, death and resurrection of Jesus. We also know, even as Christians, life is does not always feel peaceful. Viewing our circumstances through a worldly lens will always create unrest and fear within us. Feelings and what we see are not facts, they are distractions. Jesus tells us, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” (John 14:27) Later he tells his disciples, “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)
Jesus is our source of peace. “Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ” (Romans 5:1). Our focus can rest on nothing else.
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this.
Isaiah 9:6-7
