Let's talk about BREAST CANCER (what your medical provider wants you to know)...
As you know, October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Unfortunately, breast cancer has touched all of us. Let's talk about it.
A simplified explanation of breast cancer- cells of the breast go rouge & do not function as they should. There are several different types. Learn more here.
What are my risk factors? Common, unchangeable risk factors, include being born a women & aging. Family history is a significant component. Here is a breast cancer risk factors table.
What can I do to reduce my risk of breast cancer? Things you can control - keeping a healthy weight, exercising routinely, alcohol avoidance, & avoiding toxins like smoking or second-hand smoke. The goal is to live an overall healthy lifestyle.
What else do I need to know? It is important to know what your baseline or normal breast tissue is like. Changes do not automatically mean cancer but should always be addressed with your PCP or GYN.
What should I be looking for? Breast cancer symptoms include: (think changes!) Breast or nipple pain, bloody or abnormal discharge, lump or thickening of breast tissue, change in breast color, pitting/puckering of breast skin, nipple appearance changes. If you experience any of these or are unsure see your PCP ASAP. DON'T put it off. It always better to be "safe rather than sorry". Here is a link to diagrams if you are interested.
Men can also have breast cancer although not nearly as often.
What are the routine screening recommendations? The standard screening for breast cancer is a yearly mammogram starting at age 40 for those with an average risk. If you have a significant family history or any breast issues and/or changes you should have one earlier than 40. Talk with your provider.
Routine screening mammograms should be covered by your insurance. Many locations will offer free screenings the month of October. Most imaging centers will require an order from your provider.
Something to consider with mammograms... ionizing radiation exposure which can damage DNA leading to damaging cell change and increased risk of some cancers. This is something you must prayerfully consider taking into account your specific risk factors. In some cases, risk will outweigh the benefit. As always, prayerfully follow your Holy Spirit gut after doing the research & speaking with your provider.
A special note for those who will be getting their first mammogram... More than likely, you will have to go back for additional imaging. This is the routine protocol as there are no previous images available for comparison. PLEASE do not freak out!!! Trust the process. But even more, trust your Heavenly Father.
(I will remind you every week, this is for informational purposes only. Needs vary from person to person. For goodness sake, use your own discretion & go see your provider!)
What I am loving...
I finished reading Misreading Scripture with Western Eyes: Removing Cultural Blinders to Better Understand the Bible by E. Randolph Richards & Brandon J. O'Brien this week. I am so thankful for this perspective. We miss so many important layers of the Bible reading it through our time-focused, individual-centered American perspective. I encourage you to check it out! (P.S. I shared the link to the book at Amazon only for your ease. I in no way benefit.)
What I have found life-giving this week...
Walking! I am so thankful the Lord made movement so healing & inspiring. I love the opportunity to clear my head & refocus. He is such a good God to make something as simple as walking be so impactful!
Healthy eating! I have been working on the "Healthy Eating Wellness Workshop" curriculum this week. I am always in awe of how God created our bodies with such intricate details & then supplies everything we need through His creation.
Sisterhood! Carrying each others burdens in community & knowing you are seen is a beautiful gift from the Lord.
Tried a modified version of this recipe this week. You can load it up with all the veggies! My family enjoyed it. We will definitely put it in the rotation!
But GOD!
One of this week's social media posts reflects on why the name Juniper & Oak. I love these scriptures (Isaiah 55 & 61). I love who God is & how He is promising restoration & renewal. Even more I love how Jesus reads from the Isaiah 61 portion of the scroll, sits down & says He is the "fulfillment" (Luke 4:21). Has there ever been a more powerful mic drop!?! Well, yes come to think of it, the RESURRECTION!!
Juniper & Oak Wellness Co. is called to help you lean into these promises of restoration & renewal. Let me know how I can help!
Grace & Peace,
Dana
